About the previous edition
The author of this new book is a distinguished arbitrator, currently chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and with a wide international practice. He states in the Preface that his intention is twofold: to give an introduction to arbitration that is readily understandable to those with little or no previous knowledge of the subject, and to provide "a simple practice manual to more serious students".
It seems to me that both of these objects are triumphantly achieved, and I would add a third. He has also produced a work which will be useful for the practising arbitrator, for whom a convenient summary of the main provisions of the Arbitration Act 1996, combined with a perceptive commentary based on the author's long practical experience, will be of daily value. I have found this for myself. I have used the chapter on "Court assistance and intervention", and it explains the provisions of the Act clearly, effectively and with the minimum of words and analysis.
This is a book whose simplicity deserves to be called brilliant, and I commend it not only to students but also to practising arbitrators and lawyers, as their companion and guide.
The RT. Hon. Sir Anthony Evans
